The 1.7-mile passage receives an average 315 inches of snow each year, while accomodating roughly 35,000 vehicles daily. The mountain corridor is staffed 24 hours a day, every day of the year by local, state, county, and municipal law enforcement, maintenance patrols, EMS, and fellow responders.

The initial commission for this story aligned me with a writer to detail the dynamic and multi-faceted operations of the tunnel. We planned to publish in December, which meant capturing all the snow photos the season before. As the unexpected pandemic hit in March 2020, the writer had to stay home with family, so I jotted down general themes and concepts to photograph, but mostly wandered around the tunnel aiming my camera at more organic scenes
